Notification Settings

Notification settings allow users to manage how qTest sends emails to one or more recipients when a change is made to the system. For example, you can set up qTest Manager to send an email notification to a manager when a Test Case status changes. The type of email notification you set up depends on the object you select (i.e., Requirements, Test Runs, Test Cases, etc.).

Disable System Email Notification

To disable system email notifications, perform the following steps:

  1. In qTest Manager, select the Gear icon. In the drop-down menu, select Notification Settings.

  2. The "Requirement Notifications" page is displayed. Deselect the checkbox(es) in the ‘Active’ column for each event.

Add Custom Email Notifications

To add a custom email notification event, you will need to both:

  • Configure a Notification Event

  • Configure an Email template

Configure a Notification Event

  1. Select the Gear icon and select Notification Settings from the drop-down menu.

  2. Select the Test Case artifact in the left navigation panel. The "Test Case Notifications" page is displayed.

  3. Select + Add Event. The "New Event" dialog is displayed.

  4. In the "Event Name" field enter the name of the notification event.

  5. In the "Notified Fields" section, select the checkbox(es) in the Select column for the field(s) that will trigger the email notification event.

  6. In the "Recipients" section, select the individuals you want to receive the email notification.

A recipient can be defined by the user profile or based on the user's relationship to the object:
    • Subscriber: the user who subscribes to the object. You can subscribe as many project users to an object as you want.

    • Assignee: the user to whom the object is assigned. This user can be changed over time depending on the processing state of the object.

    • Creator: the user who created the object.

Configure an Email Template

  1. Still in the "New Event" dialog, select the TEMPLATE tab.

  2. In the "Subject" field, enter a subject, such as "Test Case Status Change."

You can also insert a variable into the subject line of the email.

  4. Select OK. When the status of the Test Case is changed, a notification email will be sent to the specified recipients. For example:

Configure Email Notification Based on Test Execution Status

In the following example, a testing team is working on an application where a specific test must be executed after another test. The tests are assigned to different testers and must be executed in a certain order. When the first test has been executed, qTest Manager can be used to alert the next tester if the first test does not fail.

  1. Select the Test Run artifact in the left navigation panel. The "Test Run Notifications" page is displayed.

  2. Select Add Event. The "New Event" dialog displays.

  3. In the "Event Name" field, input "Ready for Next Tester."

  4. In the "Notified Fields" section of the dialog, seelct the drop-down menu in the "Status" field.

  5. Select the appropriate checkbox(es) associated with the criteria that must be met for a notification email to be sent.

  6. In the "Recipients" section, specify who you want to receive this email notification. In this example, you would click the checkbox for ‘Assignee of the Next Test Run’ to select the tester assigned to the next test within the test suite.

Modify your Template

  1. Still in the "New Event" dialog, select the TEMPLATE tab.

  2. In the "Subject" field, enter a subject, such as "Next Test Run's URL"

  3. Type the body of the email. When you want to insert a variable into the email message, do the following:

    1. position the arrow cursor in the body of the text where you will insert the variable.

    2. Select the down arrow to the right of the "Variables" field, and select the variable to insert into the email.

    3. Insert.

You can also insert a variable into the subject line of the email.
    4. Select OK.

Global Notifications

Besides email notifications, qTest also has Global Notifications. These Global Notifications display in a drop-down menu after having selected the bell icon in qTest Manager.

Global Notifications will let you know when certain events occur in a project that you belong to. Unlike email notifications, Global Notifications alert all members of a project, and not just those assigned to certain Test Cases or Test Runs.

The Global Notification menu will only show up to the twenty most recent instances.
