Back up and restore Tricentis File Service

Tricentis File Service is a web-based application that stores your Tosca Commander files in a separate file system. Users can still access the files in the workspace, but they don't take up its storage space. This keeps workspaces slim and improves their performance.

We recommend that you back up Tricentis File Service regularly. You can use your backup if you migrate Tricentis Tosca to a new machine, or if you run into issues with your data.

What's in this topic?

This topic is for administrators with Windows access and DELETE rights. It has all the information you need to complete the following tasks:

  • Create a backup of Tricentis File Service.

  • Restore data.

Create the backup

How many backups you need to create depends on your setup:

  • If you have multiple projects that use the same Tricentis File Service instance, you only need to create one backup.

  • If you have multiple projects that use different Tricentis File Service instances, you need to create a separate backup for each instance.

Backup process

To create a backup, follow these steps:

  1. Stop Tricentis File Service. If the service is running and Tricentis Tosca writes to the service while you create your backup, the backup may become corrupted.

  2. Back up fileService.db, which contains the metadata. By default, this file is located at C:\ProgramData\TRICENTIS\FileService\fileService.db.

  3. Back up the actual files. The files are in the storage directory that you specified in the Tricentis Service Configuration.

  4. Start Tricentis File Service.

Restore data

To restore your data from a Tricentis File Service backup, follow these steps:

  1. Stop Tricentis File Service.

  2. Move the backup of the database fileService.db to the default location C:\ProgramData\TRICENTIS\FileService\fileService.db.

  3. Move the backup of the actual files to the storage directory that you specified in the Tricentis Service Configuration.

  4. Start Tricentis File Service.

Restore Tricentis File Service after migrating Tricentis Tosca to new machines

After you have installed Tricentis Tosca and Tosca Server on the new machines, make sure to restore your data in the right order:

  1. Enable Tricentis File Service.

  2. Restore the data from the Tricentis File Service backup.

  3. Restore the data from the Tricentis Tosca repository backup.
