Import or export test cases

Import test cases

You can easily import test cases into Tricentis Test Management for Jira from a Microsoft Excel file. This is useful if you want to create test cases in batches, or if you need to import test cases from another source.

When it comes to importing test cases, keep these things in mind:

• Limitations: you can import a maximum of 200 test cases at a time.

• Jira fields: each test case must have the Priority field in Jira, or the import won't work. Make sure that either the Description fields or Context fields sections in Jira have the Priority element before you start the import process.

• Structures: during the import process, you'll download a template file. Don't add columns to the file or rename table headers.

To import test cases from Excel, follow these steps:

1. In the Apps section of your Jira project, select Test Management to open Tricentis Test Management for Jira.

2. Go to the Test Design tab.

3. On the left pane, select the default folder where you want to save your imported test cases.

4. Select Import test cases from Excel file.

5. Follow the instructions to download the template file. Then, fill out the fields in the template file.

   If you have multiple entries for a field, for instance in Requirements or Labels, use a comma to separate your entries.

Field in the template file	Description
Summary	Jira issue key for the test case.
Description	Description of your test case.
Reporter	Username or email of the person who reported the test case. The username should be the first and last name of the reporter as it's recorded in Jira.
Assignee	Username or email of the person assigned the test case. The username should be the first and last name of the assignee as it's recorded in Jira.
Epic	Jira issue key for the Epic your test case is attached to.
Fix Versions	Version number that the test case covers.
Requirements	Jira issue key for any requirement you have attached to the test case.
Priority	Priority of the test case, such as High, Medium, or Low.
Labels	Jira label that organizes your Jira issues by function. This can be any identifier you've defined as a label, such as team or task type.
Component	The name of any components the issue covers. This can be any identifier you've defined as a component, such as the service, plug-in, or API you're working on.
Test Category	Category that defines whether your test is Functional or Non-Functional.
Precondition	Description of the precondition for the test case.
Folder	Destination folder in Tricentis Test Management for Jira. To import the test case into the default folder, leave the column blank. To import the test case into a child folder within the default folder, enter the folder name. If this folder doesn't exist yet, Tricentis Test Management for Jira creates it during the import. To import the test case into a sub-folder of a child folder, enter <name of the child folder/name of the sub-folder>. If one or more folders don't exist yet, Tricentis Test Management for Jira creates them during the import. You can have as many sub-folders and levels of sub-folders as you need.
Step Description	Description for your test step. You can include as many test steps as you need.
Step Data	Any step data included with the test step. You may optionally include step data with each test step.
Expected Result	Expected result of the associated test step. If you have multiple test steps, enter one Step Description and one Expected Result per row. Then, merge the respective Summary cells in the first column
*Custom field name	If you have custom fields, you can import information into them using the Excel import document. To add a custom field, enter its name in the columns at the end of the document. The name should be prefixed by an asterisk (*).

6. Upload the populated template file as instructed. If one or more entries are invalid, you need to correct them before retrying. The import only goes through if all entries are valid.

   Test cases are imported in the same order you enter them in the Excel file.

Export test cases

If you thought it was easy to import test cases from Excel, it's even easier to export cases to an Excel file. This is useful if you need to export test cases to other software systems in batches. For example, you can export your test cases to an external automation system.

To export test cases to an Excel file, follow these steps:

1. In the Apps section of your Jira project, select Test Management to open Tricentis Test Management for Jira.

2. Go to the Test Design tab.

3. Select the checkboxes next to the test cases that you want to export.

4. Click the ellipses button and select Export to Excel.
